Domenico, il medico
Personalità molto nota del Cinquecento garfagnino, Anselmo Micotti ed altri storici locali lo ritenevano medico eccellente, ed effettivamente il duca di Ferrara, Alfonso II d'Este lo scelse per essere il suo medico personale. Fu sicuramente uno dei maggiori rappresentanti della famiglia Bertacchi, che con lui entrò nelle grazie della famiglia estense.
Domenico nacque a Camporgiano in Garfagnana nella famiglia dei conti Bertacchi, come lui stesso lo scrisse nella sua opera (vedi bibliografia). Era filgio di Battista e fratello di Cesare e di Sigismondo, fattori ducali per la Garfagnana, e quindi zio di Pellegrino, vescovo di Modena e di Jacopo Bertacchi, conte di Coriano e Ligonchio. Ebbe tre figli, Lelio, Battista e Giovanni Paolo ; il suo nipote Orazio, figlio di Lelio, stette a Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, ivi continuò a rappresentare gli interessi famigliari nella città.
Non si hanno molte notizie della vita di Domenico Bertacchi che fortunatamente lasciò testimonianza della sua eccellenza tramite due opere giunte a noi : De spiritibus libri quatuor e De facultate vitali libri tres. Publicate a Venezia nel 1584 e dedicate al duca Alfonso II d'Este, queste opere riflettono le grandi credenze della medicina cinquecentesca italiana, sempre legate alla religione e ancora lontane dalla scienza. Una copia di questa pubblicazione è tuttora conservata presso la Biblioteca nazionale francese a Parigi. Domenico fu professore di medicina all'università di Genova, poì all'università del Paradiso, a Ferrara. Morì nel 1596 e fu sepolto nella chiesa ferrarese di Sant'Agata, a pochi passi del palazzo dell'università.

Personnalité fort connue du XVIème siècle en Garfagnane, il était retenu par Anselmo Micotti et les autres historiens comme un excellent médecin. Effectivement, le duc Alphonse II d'Este le choisit comme médecin personnel. Il fut certainement l'un des représentants majeurs de la famille Bertacchi qui, grâce à lui, entra dans les faveurs de la famille d'Este.
Domenico nacquit à Camporgiano dans la famille des comtes Bertacchi, comme il l'écrivit lui-même dans son oeuvre (voir bibliographie). Il était le fils de Battista et le frère de Cesare et de Sigismondo ; conséquemment, il était l'oncle de Pellegrino, évêque de Modène, et de Jacopo, comte de Coriano et de Ligonchio. Il eut trois fils, Lelio, Battista et Giovanni Paolo ; son petit-fils Orazio, fils de Lelio, resta longtemps à Castelnuovo di Garfagnana et continua à représenter les intérêts familiaux dans cette ville.
Il n'existe pas beaucoup de renseignements sur la vie de Domenico, mais ce dernier laissa heureusement des traces de son excellence par deux oeuvres qui nous sont parvenues : De spiritibus libri quatuor et De facultate vitali libri tres. Parue à Venise en 1584 et dédiée au duc Alphonse II d'Este, ces oeuvres reflètent les grandes croyances de la médecine italienne du XVIème siècle, toujours empreinte de religion et encore passablement éloignée de la science. Une copie de cette publication est conservée aujourd'hui à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Domenico fut professeur de médecine à l'Université de Gênes, puis à celle de Ferrare. Il mourut en 1596 et fut enterré dans l'église Sant'Agata de Ferrare, proche du siège de l'Université.

Famous personality of the XVI century in Garfagnana, he was considerated by Anselmo Micotti and other historians like an excellent doctor. In facts the duke Alfonso II d'Este choosed him to be his personal doctor. Domenico was certainly one of the most famous representative of the Bertacchi's family, which thanks to him was in the family d'Este good books.
Domenico is born in Camporgiano, in the family of the counts Bertacchi as he wrote himself in his book (see bibliography). He was the son of Battista, the brother of Cesare and Sigismondo. Consequently, he was uncle of Pellegrino, bishop of Modena, and of Jacopo, count of Coriano and Ligonchio. He had 3 sons, Lelio, Battista and Giovanni Paolo ; his grandson Orazio, soon of Lelio, stayed in Castelnuovo to represent the stakes of the family in this city.
We don't have a lot of informations about the Domenico's life but fortunately he wrote two books which are today the only evidences of his excellence :De spiritibus libri quatuor and De facultate vitali libri tres. Published in Venice in the year 1584 and inscribed to the duke Alfonso II d'Este, this treatises are about the theory of italian medicine in the XVI century. Medicine and religion was confused and medicine was certainly not a science. A copy of those books are today kept in the French National Library in Paris. Domencio was professor of medicine in the University of Genova and in the University of Ferrara. He died in the years 1596 and was buried in Sant'Agata church in Ferrara, near the University.
